Vessels Lost in WW2 Recorded on the Memorial at Tower Hill

This page includes basic information about the ships and how they were lost, a photo of the relevant panel(s) of the Tower Hill Memorial and information about those that lost their lives extracted from the CWGC database. In the table I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as this seems appropriate to me. In some cases further family information about the individuals may be available on the CWGC website [7].

Afric Star

This 10,644 GRT refrigerated cargo ship was intercepted by German raider Kormoran and captured after gunfire. The Germans boarded her and, after failing to scuttle her, eventually sank her with gunfire on 29 January 1941 at an approximate position of 08° N, 25° W. The crew escaped in lifeboats and were picked up by Kormoran. Some days later the prisoners were transferred to the German supply tanker Nordmark which was masquerading under the "Stars and Strips" and the name of Dixie, and a few days afterwards to a ship called the Portland, a motor-vessel of 7,000 tons bound from Chile to Bordeaux in German-occupied France. On the voyage a fire broke out onboard, and the German guard, considering it was a case of mutiny and an attempt to destroy the ship, opened fire, killing one passenger and an able seaman of the Afric Star. The Portland with about 300 people from sunken vessels finally arrived at Bordeaux on March 14th, the prisoners eventually being sent to internment camps in Germany. I presume that Mr. Callan was killed during the raid, Mr. Freeman was the person shot for supposed 'mutiny' and the others died whilst in captivity in Germany.
